Dispatches from the wilds of Poetania – Missed Connection 3

To the driver
of the uptown 2
from 4 to 5:30
this afternoon.

You were hidden from me,
like a princess in the Palace of Winds,
but how could you be anything short of beautiful,
with that voice,
like an angel’s,
or, at least, what I imagine an angel’s would sound like,
filtered through a 30-year-old PA system
with a loose wire or two?
With the deep velvet rumble
of a perfect-sculpted double-bass?
I rode an extra two-dozen stops,
just to hear you name them all,
like choral odes
from a lyric goddess.
The way you came through,
muffled, muted,
a murmured mumble,
I imagined you,
alone in your cruel glass cage,
forever racing ahead of us,
away from us,
and our inquisitive eyes.

I imagined you,
so shy.
So painfully shy,
like me.
